What is a prenatal yoga teacher’s aim?

November 1, 2020

Joy! That’s right. Our main aim is to create and spread joy.

I know what you think, but those are the positive effects of prenatal yoga. Let me elucidate:

Many women and experts think that prenatal yoga classes are for women who want to deliver their babies without pain or who prefer a vaginal natural birth. Although studies clearly show how beneficial prenatal yoga is in preparing for labor; unfortunately, we cannot say that it guarantees vaginal delivery, nor is this the focus of prenatal yoga.

When we look at these classes, we do not solely focus on actual labor. Moms-to-be go through so many different emotions and experiences during their pregnancies. After pregnancy and labor, the journey does not end, as the postpartum process follows. This is sometimes called the 4th trimester.

A good class should consider all 4 trimesters, and in every class, students should feel as though they are learning one thing for every stage!

Let’s get back to our aim. We call it: “the spiral of joy”. I would like to quote Birhtlight’s full description here since I am one of them. “We aim to enhance the wellbeing of women and their partners through the journey of pregnancy and birth, helping parents and infants relax in shared enjoyment of their new life together. As the focus on pregnancy and birth becomes increasingly medical and science-based, birthright works in partnership with mainstream healthcare to ensure the physical and emotional nurturing of pregnant women and their families.” It is a very holistic approach to pregnancy, birth, and babyhood. We don’t leave anyone or any stage out.

As Gurmukh says in one of her books; when a baby is born, a woman is born as a mom, a man is born as a dad, and a couple is born as a family. Just like throwing a stone into a lake, this new life affects everyone circle by circle.

As a prenatal yoga teacher, I am here to make sure that pregnant women can use yoga and mindfulness techniques to alleviate the issues they may be facing; while also fully enjoying their health.
